the STRETCH
Health Tip: The Stretch
Watch any animal wake up, a dog, a cat, even birds and horses, and you’ll see the same instinct play out. Before a single step is taken, the body stretches: front legs reaching forward, then back, holding at the farthest reach before a little squeeze and tremble moves through the whole body. It’s not unique to one species. Stretching after rest is something nearly every animal does, and it’s worth asking why nature built that instinct in so consistently.
Squeeze Like a Sponge
The key isn’t just the reach, it’s what happens at the height of the stretch. Hold that farthest point and gently squeeze the muscles for 5-7 seconds. Think of a muscle like a sponge: while it’s been sitting still, it holds onto built-up waste and excess fluid. Squeezing it at full stretch wrings that out, the same way you’d squeeze a sponge before dipping it in fresh water.
Once that squeeze releases, the muscle, fascia, and skin are primed to absorb new hydration instead of just holding onto what’s stagnant. That’s the real mechanism behind why stretching leaves you feeling more flexible and less creaky: it’s not just movement, it’s actively making room for fresh hydration to move back in.
More Than One Reason to Stretch
The physical benefits are just part of the picture. Stretching also offers:
A moment of relaxation and self-soothing. By releasing muscular tension and stress built up after a period of inactivity, stretching delivers the body into a state of calm and contentment, releasing dopamine, one of the brain’s “happy hormones,” in the process.
Improved elasticity. Regular stretching, especially with that squeeze-and-hold at the peak, builds greater elasticity in muscles, fascia, and skin over time, not just in the moment.
Less stiffness, more ease of movement. Joints that get this kind of attention consistently tend to feel less creaky and move more freely throughout the day.
Try It Tomorrow Morning
Before your feet hit the floor, reach both arms overhead, lengthen through your whole body, and hold at the farthest point. Squeeze gently for 5-7 seconds, like wringing out a sponge, then release and let the tremble happen naturally. Let your body do what it already knows how to do, the same instinct every animal wakes up with.
