How It Works Understanding
Your Dental Plan

Dental insurance can help lower the cost of care you would otherwise pay out of pocket. Here’s what you need to know before choosing a plan:

  • 1
    You pay a premium

Most often a monthly amount paid to the insurance carrier. If coverage comes through an employer, it may be deducted from your pay. If you have two plans, the first plan pays first.

  • 2
There may be a waiting period

You may have to wait up to 12 months for full benefits. However, preventive care is usually included from day one at no cost.

  • 3
Do you have a primary dentist?

Check with your dentist about their preferred carrier. Sometimes dentists have their own program for regular care.

  • 4
    In-network vs. out-of-network

Depending on the plan, you may or may not be required to see dentists within the plan’s network.

  • 5
    Frequency and limitations matter

These terms tell you what you’re covered for, what you’re not, and when full benefits begin.

  • 6
    Deductibles

A deductible is the amount you must pay out-of-pocket before your plan starts sharing costs.

  • 7
    Coinsurance, maximums & copays

Once you meet your deductible, you and your plan share costs. Most plans have an annual maximum — after that, you pay all additional costs.

  • 8
    Preventive care is often no-cost

Oral exams every six months and routine x-rays are typically included at no cost. Children may receive additional preventive care as well.

  • 9
Plan ahead for the care you need

Coverage is broken into categories: preventive, restorative, orthodontic, and more. If you anticipate crowns, root canals, or implants, choose a plan that covers specialized care.
